Toddlers have a mind of their own so taking photographs is both challenging and rewarding.
My idea to relax children is to get into their world, each child is different so each situation calls for a different tactic. Most of the time it doesn’t take much to relax them by asking them about their favourite toy, explain what is going to happen during the photo session, or asking them what they would like to do for a photograph is a great way to involve them. Allowing them to open up at their pace and encouraging positive language relaxes the mums and dads also. I then photograph quickly! When it’s time to leave they want me to stay and play!
Children who are a bit older understand what a photographer does, so I try to capture those candid moments between the cheesy grins! What I love about my work is watching the interaction between siblings, friends and family. I love learning about their favourite toy, book or activity they enjoy. Children are happy to go about their activities chatting to me as I photograph. Parks are great for older children as they have room to run, play and hide. The varied natural landscape offers colours that work brilliantly for kids photography.
