Cake Smash Sessions

September 15, 2020 By [email protected]

My style of Cake smash sessions are fresh, simple and bright with pops of colour. I find this style to be the best way to capture the expressions of your baby without them being distracted by too many props. It also means the focus is on your baby and not the busyness of surrounding items.

I love coloured bunting to add colour, (perhaps from their 1st Birthday theme or their bedroom colours) then add your cake with some of that matching colour on it and you have an easy fresh setup. (Scroll down to see the cake smash gallery.)

I have several bunting designs (Scroll down to view) you’re welcome to incorporate or you’re most welcome to bring your own. Alternatively, one (seeing as they’re turning 1) helium balloon is sweet, and is enough to add depth to your photo and create a birthday feel. Flowers, or artificial plant greenery looks beautiful also just laid out along the skirting board for a natural organic look.

As for the cake, please bring your own to avoid allergy concerns. Some Mum’s make 2 flavours of cake (chocolate/vanilla/banana etc) and layer them on top of each other just in case their baby doesn’t like the flavour of one of them. Circle shaped cakes are ideal as it doesn’t matter what angle I shoot from. I suggest a couple of pre-made sponge cakes from Coles/Woolworths, stack them on top of each other, then cover in icing and/or sprinkles. Easy and cheap. Spreading jam between cake layers might help interest them to taste the cake.

Be prepared that your baby might not feel comfortable messing up a cake. A lot do cry (They won’t always cry when they see cake! haha) so I encourage them by breaking out a chunk of cake to show them what is inside and watch how they react. I just go with the flow!

Afterwards, I offer a warm splash bath to clean the cake and stickiness off them. I blow bubbles, take a few photos of them reaching for bubbles then they’re all ready to get dressed and go home (perhaps for a good sleep).

I love styling sessions, so please get in touch with me!
